While in high school, Ms. Koester volunteered with the YWCA and at a children’s psychiatric center working with children and youth with disabilities and developed an early appreciation of the importance of advocating for her students. Her parents valued education and instilled in her a strong work ethic, and she studied at the University of Evansville, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1978 and a Master of Arts in 1982. In 2010, she obtained an Educational Specialist degree from Indiana State University. Ms. Koester began her career as a special education teacher for North Posey Junior High School where she would remain for 28 years. From 2006 until 2010, she was an educational diagnostician for Posey County Special Services and a learning and enrichment specialist at Evansville Day School from 2010 to 2016.
Today, Ms. Koester is a school psychologist for the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation. Since 2016, she has worked with a middle school, a junior high school, and two high schools, where she assists in observations, completes educational evaluations to determine students’ disability support needs, and re-evaluates cases as needed. Additionally, she coaches building-level teams in social and emotional learning strategies and interventions for students that are not meeting grade-level standards. Ms. Koester is a member of the National Education Association, the Indiana State Teachers Association, the Evansville Teachers Association, and is the past president of the Posey Education Association. She attributes her success to her desire for change and advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves. To attest to her legacy, Dr. Koester is also listed in Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who of American Women.
