Candace C. Fielders, RN, MSN, DHS, Regional Clinical Manager at the Alabama Department of Corrections, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Healthcare Professionals for dedication, achievements and leadership in Medical and Mental Healthcare Oversight.
With nearly two decades of experience in the healthcare sector, Dr. Fielders has distinguished herself as an expert in medical and mental healthcare oversight. Her career is marked by a steadfast commitment to advancing the quality of care for vulnerable populations, particularly those within correctional settings. Since 2019, she has served as a regional clinical manager for the Alabama Department of Corrections. In this capacity, Dr. Fielders oversees the medical and mental healthcare provided by contracted vendors across multiple facilities. She regularly visits sites to engage with staff, including physicians and healthcare vendor teams, and addresses healthcare concerns among inmates in infirmaries, restrictive housing areas, general population units and mental health wings.
Before her current role, Dr. Fielders was the director of nursing for mental health at Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women from 2015 to 2019. There, she focused on the unique needs of incarcerated women experiencing mental health challenges and worked to ensure that appropriate standards of care were maintained throughout the facility. Dr. Fielders’ advocacy for mental health among incarcerated populations stands as her most notable achievement. By highlighting the needs of inmates facing mental health issues and addressing stigma within correctional environments, she has promoted greater understanding and compassion for this often-overlooked group.
Earlier, between 2011 and 2014, Dr. Fielders contributed to the education of future nurses as a nursing instructor at Central Alabama Community College. Her work in academia allowed her to share her knowledge with aspiring professionals while reinforcing her own commitment to lifelong learning. Dr. Fielders also excelled as a home health and hospice nurse with Alacare from 2009 to 2011, providing essential care to patients in their homes during critical periods.
Dr. Fielders’ foundational experience in mental health began at Searcy Hospital in Mount Vernon, Alabama, where she worked as a mental health nurse from 2007 to 2009. This role deepened her expertise in psychiatric care and reinforced her dedication to supporting individuals with complex behavioral health needs. Dr. Fielders’ entry into healthcare was as a therapist with East Alabama Mental Health, where she developed a strong focus on mental health services that would shape her subsequent career trajectory.
Possessing a rich educational background, Dr. Fielders acquired an associate’s degree from Central Alabama Community College in Alexander City, Alabama, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, in 2001, followed by a master’s degree in counseling and education from Troy University in Troy, Alabama, in 2004, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of South Alabama in 2007, a master’s degree in nursing education from the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama, in 2009, and a Doctor of Health Sciences from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, in 2026. This diverse academic foundation has enabled her to combine clinical expertise with counseling skills, an approach she intentionally pursued after recognizing that comprehensive care requires both medical knowledge and an understanding of behavioral health.
Dr. Fielders has remained committed to excellence as a member of both the Chi Sigma Iota Honor Society and the Alabama Nursing Association, affiliations that reflect her dedication to professional development and engagement with industry peers. Outside of her professional responsibilities, she remains active within her church community despite limited time for broader volunteer work due to career demands and parental commitments. Now that she has completed her doctoral degree, Dr. Fielders anticipates engaging more deeply with volunteer opportunities moving forward.
Attributing her success to determination and an unwavering passion for learning, Dr. Fielders’ plans to continue providing nursing care within her current capacity while pursuing additional certifications and specialized training rather than further academic degrees. Her decision to pivot from counseling and education back to nursing was driven by a desire to offer more holistic care for individuals with mental health disorders. By gaining proficiency in both clinical medicine and psychological support, Dr. Fielders has positioned herself as a leader capable of addressing multifaceted patient needs within complex environments such as correctional facilities.
