In this capacity, Ms. Young manages the comprehensive workflow of incoming slides, meticulously checks hematoxylin and eosin stains, reviews special stains and verifies immunoelectrophoresis procedures to ensure accuracy. She also verifies frozen section stains, performs microscopic examinations to confirm color accuracy and maintains cryostat functionality.
Among other responsibilities, Ms. Young is responsible for passing slides to pathologists for review and responding to feedback or requests for additional staining as needed. She also handles legal cases involving the preparation and transfer of slides and blocks to other institutions. Additionally, Ms. Young communicates with legal firms to provide detailed inventories of stored materials, ensuring compliance with retention protocols.
Before being acquired by the John H. Stronger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Ms. Young was a section supervisor of histology at Mount Sinai Hospital, Sinai Chicago, from 2015 to 2023. During her tenure, she led a team in delivering high-quality histological services and was recognized with an award from the institution for her outstanding contributions. Ms. Young’s foundational experience was shaped by her two-decade-long career at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where she developed advanced skills in imaging techniques and the microscopic anatomy of tissues.
Ms. Young’s professional journey began with an early interest in mortuary science, attending school in 1979 for one year before redirecting her focus toward histology. Becoming highly educated, she earned a bachelor’s degree in management in 2007 and a Master of Business Administration in management in 2010 from Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois. Ms. Young passed the American Society for Clinical Pathology certification, received histology certification from Indiana University at Purdue, and mastered immunoelectrophoresis procedures, interpretations and special stains, helping to define her expertise and bringing her significant professional satisfaction.
Ms. Young is an active member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology, reflecting her commitment to professional development. Beyond her professional affiliations, she has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to community as a volunteer packing boxes at a local food pantry for more than a decade.
Reflecting on her success, Ms. Young attributes much of it to her meticulous attention to detail, a critical skill for distinguishing between high- and low-quality stains, and a strong motivation to achieve personal goals while setting an example for her children that perseverance leads to accomplishment. Notably, her entry into the field was influenced by a pathologist who recognized her potential and encouraged her return to formal education, ultimately shaping the trajectory of her career.
Looking ahead, Ms. Young aspires to retire from active practice while considering further academic advancement through doctoral studies. She hopes to be remembered in the field for being knowledgeable, caring and generous with her expertise, someone who treated others with respect and kindness throughout her career.
