Title: Supervising Psychiatric Social Worker
Company: California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation
Location: Vallejo, California, United States
Eileen Joy E. Esporo, supervising psychiatric social worker at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in mental health and government.
Dedicated to helping others, Ms. Esporo initially planned to attend law school but was encouraged to pursue social work instead. That has blossomed into a career of more than 15 years in the field. Ms. Esporo took on her first internship while working on her Master of Social Work in 2006 through the New Jersey Department of Human Services’ Division of Developmental Disabilities. She went on to complete internships at Mather Community Campus and Emerson Elementary School, later contributing to the county of Sacramento’s Family Maintenance and Permanency Services divisions.
In 2010, Ms. Esporo became a clinical social worker with the Salinas Valley Psychiatric Program. In this early role, she worked at an intermediate care facility, handling up to 30 patients at a time with a focus on stabilizing mentally unstable individuals and then transitioning them to outpatient care. After learning many important lessons in this position, Ms. Esporo joined the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation as a clinical social worker. She supported the state’s enhanced outpatient program, leading clinical groups and seeing patients individually every other week. Ms. Esporo went on to such roles as psychiatric social worker II with the county of Monterey, a second tenure as a licensed clinical social worker with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, behavioral health unit supervisor for the county of Monterey’s crisis team, and licensed clinical social worker with Talkspace. Throughout all of these experiences, she has prioritized flexibility and a willingness to take on new challenges as a means of building her understanding of other people.
Returning to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation in 2020, Ms. Esporo has served as a supervising psychiatric social worker since 2024. She works within the pipeline for psychiatric inpatient placement, overseeing both acute treatment and intermediate care facility treatment. Ms. Esporo’s responsibilities include meeting with staff members to set individual goals, restructuring programs as needed, ensuring that all patients are seen, monitoring treatment goals for those patients, guaranteeing that compliance standards are reached and addressing any other issues as they come up. In addition to this, she has been part of a private practice, Turning Points Psychology Center Inc., since 2023, where she sees a small number of patients one-on-one each week.
Ms. Esporo’s performance in the field was born of her academic journey. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in political science with a minor in sociology from San José State University in 1998. Subsequently, Ms. Esporo earned a Master of Social Work from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in 2007. She was most recently licensed as a clinical social worker in 2016.
When she’s not working, Ms. Esporo finds balance through running, exercise and playing golf. She is dedicated to remaining in her current position with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for the foreseeable future while also looking to progress in her career. Ms. Esporo has considered pursuing a chief role but also has aspirations to open a private practice in her own name. Whatever path she takes, she looks forward to continuing to help her patients and the world at large.
