Initially trained as a physician, Dr. Dennis completed medical school on a military scholarship and soon shifted into a lengthy tenure with the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Across nearly 20 years with Walter Reed, he continued his education and provided a high quality of service, eventually being promoted to the chief of rheumatology and clinical immunology. While working at Walter Reed, Dr. Dennis embraced opportunities for additional training and travel, including spending six months practicing internal medicine in Honduras and a two-year tour in Germany. During his time in Germany, he was stationed at Landstuhl, contributing as head of rheumatology for a major referral hospital for all European military forces.

Dr. Dennis retired from the U.S. Army in 2001 and was then recruited by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) at the National Institutes of Health. During both his time at Walter Reed and with NIAMS, he dedicated 15 years to the position of fellowship training director. In this role, Dr. Dennis had a major impact on the training of more than 100 physicians, which he considers to be the greatest accomplishment of his career.

Transitioning to the biopharmaceutical industry, Dr. Dennis joined PPD, a contract research organization (CRO), in 2013 as the vice president of rheumatology, nephrology, rare disease and general medicine. After five years in that position, he transitioned to another CRO, IQVIA, where he became the senior vice president of therapeutic science and strategy in 2018. In 2023, Dr. Dennis shifted within the organization, accepting the role of senior vice president of public health and external affairs. Until parting ways with IQVIA in 2025, he played a key role in many of the company’s initiatives, including overseeing 16 different centers of excellence, each with unique areas of focus. Dr. Dennis specialized in research skills during his time at IQVIA, aiding the organization in making significant contributions to cutting-edge advancements in the health care field. He views his tireless pursuit of knowledge and breakthroughs in research and medications as the defining trait across his career.

Dr. Dennis’ performance in the field was born of his academic journey, beginning with obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in biology from the University of Missouri in 1976. Subsequently, he earned an MD from Saint Louis University’s School of Medicine in 1980. Dr. Dennis completed his residency in internal medicine with the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in 1983 and a fellowship in rheumatology at the National Capital Consortium in 1985. He went on to conduct postdoctoral studies in cellular and molecular immunology at the Uniformed Services University. Additionally, Dr. Dennis has been certified in internal medicine and rheumatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

To commemorate his achievements, Dr. Dennis has received a number of noteworthy accolades. He was presented with the Minority Student Academic Honors Award in 1973, the Hugh Mahon Lectureship Award and Internal Medicine Resident Research Award in 1983, the Fellow Award in 1984, the Outstanding Teacher Award in 1994, the Medical Student Research Award in 1999 and the Director’s Award in Mentoring from the National Institutes of Health in 2003. Dr. Dennis was nominated for the Clinical Center Fellows Mentoring Award in 2001, receiving the Legion of Merit honor the same year. Most recently, his career was celebrated through a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Missouri’s College of Arts and Sciences in 2019.

In addition to his esteemed professional life, Dr. Dennis is a loving father to one son and one daughter, whom he enjoys spending time with when he’s not working. His other hobbies include sports, hiking, exercising and going to the movies. As he looks toward what’s next after his role at IQVIA, Dr. Dennis is excited to improve the efficiency and costs of clinical trials, as well as how those trials are understood by the wider public. He also intends to continue teaching the next generation of physicians and clinical researchers, with a focus on preparing them to provide compassionate care. Whatever Dr. Dennis’ next full-time position, he is devoted to continuing to find ways to positively contribute to the lives of others.
