Presently managing four unique companies, Dr. Chin has been the co-founder and chief innovation officer of TAS Medial Inc. since 2017, PercAssist Inc. since 2019, FemDx Medsystems Inc. since 2020 and Orare Medsystems Inc. since 2022.
Dr. Chin has co-founded several other companies throughout his remarkable career, including Saphena Medical, Origin MedSystems Inc., Pavilion Medical Innovations LLC, nVision Medical Inc., Cruzar Medsystems Inc., and InnoVein Inc. He also garnered success as the vice president of research at Guidant Cardiac Surgery from 1994 to 2007 and was the chief innovation officer at Boston Scientific Cardiac Surgery between 2007 and 2008 and Maquet Cardiovascular from 2008 to 2009.
Highly educated, Dr. Chin received a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1975. He then studied at Stanford University, completing a Master of Science in mechanical engineering in 1976 and coursework in human biology in 1979. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Chin earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of California in San Francisco in 1983. Additional educational pursuits to his credit included a surgical residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 1985.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Chin secured 230 patents in his field, resulting in multiple medical devices and other inventions. He notably spent over 10 years conducting cardiovascular research under Thomas J. Fogarty, MD, between 1978 and 1989, a successful surgeon and medical device inventor. Dr. Chin also had the opportunity to present recently before the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs in Baltimore in 2024. However, his most notable accomplishment was after the launch of PercAssist Inc., where he successfully designed and invented life-saving technology.
Besides his primary career objectives, Dr. Chin has enjoyed giving back to education as an advisory board member at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Savannah and Emory University in Atlanta. He was formerly active in his parish as a church organist. Dr. Chin’s tenure as a violinist in a local symphony in Grand Junction, Colorado, is a testament to his musical skills.
Recognizing his many accomplishments, Dr. Chin received his first accolade in 1974, a Third-Place Award in an MIT Innovation Contest. He was also recognized by the school of medicine at the University of California with a Dean’s Award for Research in 1983. Years later, Dr. Chin received recognition in the field with an Ideals of Entrepreneurship Award, Emerging Entrepreneurs in Biomedical Technology, from Stanford University in 2007 and an “Invented Here!” Top Award from Boston Patent Law Association in 2018.
Dr. Chin attributes his success to his commitment to continuous learning. He looks forward to constant improvement and excelling in his field. In the coming years, he anticipates focusing more on designing functional medical devices. His goal is to ensure that each device works effectively for its intended purposes. Dr. Chin is also committed to creating prototypes, conducting bench testing, and ensuring the functionality of each device. Moreover, he emphasizes the importance of animal studies.
