Mindi L. Kauffman, MSW, traveling social worker at Aya Healthcare Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Healthcare Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in social services.
With over a decade and a half of experience, Ms. Kauffman has built a successful career in social work. Since 2022, she has been a traveling social worker with Aya Healthcare Inc., where she works in hospitals across the country, focusing on emergency departments, inpatient units, and mental health units. Her previous experience includes roles as a social worker with Med Travelers, AMN Healthcare from 2020 to 2022, a mental health therapist at Broadlawns Medical Center from 2019 to 2020, a mental health professional at Polk County Jail from 2018 to 2019, a mobile crisis counselor at The Crisis Center of Johnson County, CommUnity Crisis Services from 2017 to 2018, and a behavior specialist at Mercy Medical Center, Mercy Cedar Rapids from 2014 to 2018. She is also an active volunteer with The American National Red Cross and is a member of several professional organizations, including Active Minds, the Social Work Registry with the Association of Social Work Boards, and the National Association of Social Workers. She has held leadership roles as co-president of the Social Work Organization at Mount Mercy University and has been involved with the Graduate Social Work Organization at The University of Iowa.
Ms. Kauffman laid a solid educational foundation, earning a Bachelor of Arts in social work from Mount Mercy University in 2017 and a Master of Social Work from The University of Iowa in 2018. Her passion for the mental health aspect of corrections led her to her first post-graduation role at a county jail in Iowa, where she spent about a year helping first-time inmates receive the mental health support they needed. However, due to the politics and dissatisfaction with the work environment, she pursued a career as a traveling social worker, a role she has held ever since. Her journey through school and into social work has taught her invaluable lessons in patience. Working in the mental health field, particularly during crises, has shown her that individuals may not react in expected ways. She approaches each situation with empathy and understanding, knowing that in times of crisis, people can behave unpredictably.
Ms. Kauffman takes great pride in stepping out of her comfort zone and discovering the areas where she excels, particularly in the emergency department and psychology field. She attributes her success to her passion for helping people with their mental health and her commitment to traveling across the country to do so. In the coming years, she aims to become a certified life coach. She also hopes to work at Bellevue in Manhattan and earn a certificate in forensic social work. While she already provides guidance and support to friends, colleagues, and others she meets, she believes that becoming a life coach would allow her to help and support people in an even more meaningful way.
