Title: Clinical Counselor
Company: Zeiders Enterprises
Location: Honolulu, Hawaii, United States
Duane F. Barone, clinical counselor at Zeiders Enterprises, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Healthcare Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in rehabilitative counseling.
With 33 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Barone has excelled as a clinical counselor at Zeiders Enterprises since January 2022 as a civilian contractor with the US Navy based at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam. He began his career as a psychotherapist after graduate school when he founded Caledonia Counseling in 2005 and specialized in court-ordered rehabilitative counseling in the domestic violence field. Before embarking on his professional path, he pursued an education at Texas A&M University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology in 1989. After a dozen years helping adults with intellectual disabilities and chronic mental illness in community-based services, he continued his academic efforts at the University of Colorado Denver. Mr. Barone graduated with his Master of Arts in clinical psychology in 2003 and furthered his graduate studies via Capella University 2003-2005. He holds a certificate as a licensed mental health counselor.
In addition to his primary vocation, Mr. Barone remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. On Valentine’s Day 2018, he founded the 501c3 nonprofit organization STudents & Athletes for Healthy RelationshipS, STAHRS.org. Due to Mr. Barone’s expertise in understanding interpersonal violence, he developed and co-authored the children’s book, “The Big Fire” (2020), the third book in the Bruno’s Amazing Adventures series, which addresses bullying and inclusion. He attributes his success to his enthusiasm and compassion without judging clients for their actions. Instead, he helps them to identify the pieces of their personal ‘puzzle’ so that clients can understand their emotional baggage, how it affects them, and how to create healthy relationship dynamics. He cares about people and wants to help them improve their lives.
Mr. Barone started his bachelor’s degree as a finance and accounting major. He faced a dilemma when he had to choose between taking upper-level major classes or pursuing his newfound passion for psychology. He had developed an interest in sports psychology due to his background in competitive sports and wanted to combine these two passions. However, after completing his bachelor’s degree, his career took a different direction and he worked with intellectually disabled adults and chronically mentally ill adults. He eventually started working in domestic violence treatment after graduate school due to his internship experiences.
Mr. Barone’s most notable achievement was creating and maintaining a private practice specializing in rehabilitative counseling for so many years. He is also proud of starting a nonprofit organization, which he jokes is like earning a PhD. He is also thrilled to be able to work with active-duty military members and their families. In the immediate future, he intends to write and publish a book about his work and to spend more time on his hobbies, which include golf, racquetball, skiing, fishing, and sailing. He wants to see STAHRS grow to a point where he can be a paid executive director.
