Gordon E. MacKinnon, Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist at MacKinnon Psychological Associates, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in clinical psychology.
Having accrued nearly 35 years of professional expertise in his field, Dr. MacKinnon became a licensed clinical psychologist in 1986. Since 1997, he has excelled as a clinical psychologist in private practice, MacKinnon Psychological Associates, where he sees patients of all ages, including adults, adolescents, and children alike. He specializes in marriage, family therapy, and general trauma, which also touches upon psychological trauma and stress. In addition to his private practice, Dr. MacKinnon has worked at Rochester University in Rochester Hills, Michigan, since 1998 as a professor of psychology, as well as department chair until 2019. Notably, the institution honored him by naming the MacKinnon Psychology Counseling Clinic in his name, of which he serves as an educator and director.
Named a Top Docs Psychologist in 2020, Dr. MacKinnon was also named the 2014 Distinguished Faculty of the Year at Rochester University. He attributes the success of his career endeavors to being interested in people’s stories and also being driven by his ethics. Serving as vice president of the Academy for Psychoanalytic Arts, Dr. MacKinnon has also volunteered his time to a prostate cancer support group at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, for more than five years. Looking toward the future, he hopes to remain in private practice and take on part-time consulting. In his spare time, Dr. MacKinnon enjoys keeping his mind alive by growing bonsai trees, practicing amateur magic, and printing on a circa-1886 letterpress.
Dr. MacKinnon originally planned on spearheading a career in relation to psychotherapy. From that launching pad, he moved into psychology because it offered him the widest range of possibilities for the future. In 1981, he received a Bachelor of Science in religious education from Rochester University and a Bachelor of Science in human resource development from Oakland University. He went on to study at Wayne State University, where he achieved a Master of Arts in marriage and family therapy in 1987. Continuing his education, Dr. MacKinnon obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical psychology from the University of Detroit-Mercy in 1997.
