Dr. Chambless R. Johnston III, chief executive officer at New Life Medicine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Healthcare Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care.
With over a decade and a half of experience, Dr. Johnston has established a successful career in health care, specializing in addiction treatment. He currently serves as chief executive officer of New Life Medicine and Integrative Addiction Consulting, roles he has held since 2022. His prior leadership roles include chief executive officer at East Tennessee Recovery from 2016 to 2022 and owner and chief executive officer of Restoration and Wellness from 2015 to 2022. Earlier in his career, he was medical director of the hospitalist program at Franklin Woods Community Hospital from 2013 to 2015, medical director for East Tennessee Skilled Care and Nursing Home Care from 2012 to 2015, and medical director of the hospital program at Clinch Valley Health from 2009 to 2011. Laying a solid educational foundation, he earned a Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in history from East Tennessee State University in 2001 and a Doctor of Medicine in internal medicine from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in 2006, completing his residency in internal medicine at East Tennessee State University in 2009. Board-certified in addictionology since 2015, he is a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the American Medical Association.
Reflecting on his path, during Dr. Johnston’s tenure at Franklin Woods Community Hospital he realized a critical gap in specialized care for individuals struggling with addiction. Driven by his commitment to holistic wellness, he pursued board certification in addictionology alongside his internal medicine training. In 2014, he left the hospital to establish his own practice, dedicated to offering comprehensive, personalized care for patients battling addiction, with his vision for the practice being incorporating spiritual principles and a range of services designed to transform lives. He takes great pride in successfully launching his company in the face of initial skepticism from critics. Additionally, while working with a small community hospital in rural southwest Virginia, Clinch Valley Hospital, he initiated a significant revitalization of the hospital program, which improved patient care within the local community, reducing the need to transfer patients to other facilities. Under his leadership, the daily patient list grew from two to as many as 40 or 50, marking a notable expansion in the hospital’s reach and impact. Today, the organization operates seven facilities and has pioneered the first inter-nurse contract in the Medicare and Medicaid system across Tennessee and Virginia.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. Johnston was awarded the Integrative Care Award and named Resident of the Year in 2009. He attributes his success to his perseverance, unwavering dedication, and passion for saving lives. He also emphasizes that money and leaving a legacy were never his driving forces, but his primary focus has always been providing the best care for his patients. He also notes his steadfast faith in God, believing that he would not have succeeded without His guidance. In the coming years, he plans to continue addressing community needs by offering integrated care for addiction, mental health, and primary care at a single location. He aims to connect these services with a pharmacy to streamline patient care and ensure a comprehensive approach to health care delivery.
