Adolfo Fuentes-Alburo, Head of Global Medical Affairs and Global Medical Leader of Oncology at GE HealthCare, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Healthcare Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in oncology and healthcare administration.
With 30 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Fuentes-Alburo has excelled as the head of global medical affairs and a global medical leader of oncology in the pharmaceutical diagnostics department of GE Healthcare since 2023. In this position, he interacts with physicians and institutions in various regions and countries, guiding them specifically on the application of the principles of medical affairs. Likewise, Dr. Fuentes-Alburo collaborates with the research and development divisions to support trials with internal partners and stakeholders.
Prior to these roles, Dr. Fuentes-Alburo was active with Viatris Inc. as the senior director of medical affairs and biosimilars for Mylan from 2018 to 2019, the director of medical affairs, biosimilars, and oncology for The Americas and European Union in 2020, and as the global medical lead for oncology and diabetes for Global NCD Excellence from 2020 to 2021. He previously served in multiple posts with Novartis AG between 2009 and 2018, including as a medical advisor, a regional oncology medical director, the head of endocrinology and rare diseases for medical franchises in Latin America and Canada, a global brand medical director, and a senior global brand medical director. Dr. Fuentes-Alburo formerly worked as a medical advisor for EMD Serono and Merck KGaA from 2008 to 2009.
Dr. Fuentes-Alburo began his career as a staff surgeon with Instituto Nacional de Cancerología from 1994 to 2009. He simultaneously found success as a surgical oncologist with Hospital Angeles Pedregal between 1997 and 2013. During this time, Dr. Fuentes-Alburo held several appointments with Sociedad Mexicana de Oncología, such as the secretary and chairman of the internal affairs committee from 2004 to 2005 and the chairman of the Public Relations and International Affairs Committee from 2008 to 2013.
To support his professional ambitions, Dr. Fuentes-Alburo initially pursued an education at Universidad La Salle, from which he obtained a Doctor of Medicine in medicine in 1990 and a Doctor of Medicine in general surgery in 1994. He continued his academic efforts with a Doctor of Medicine in surgical oncology at Secretaria de Salud in 1997. Soon thereafter, Dr. Fuentes-Alburo obtained an associate degree in thanatology at Instituto Mexicano de Tanatología in 1999.
Following these accomplishments, Dr. Fuentes-Alburo completed postgraduate training in cancer genetics from Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas in 2001. A believer in continued education, he diversified his studies at Instituto Cultural Helénico with an associate degree in art history in 2006. Dr. Fuentes-Alburo ultimately concluded his formal higher education at the University of Wales in 2014, graduating with a postgraduate certificate in business administration.
Dr. Fuentes-Alburo has attributed his success to the influence and support of his peers, his consistency and his dedication to hard work. He was notably inspired to seek a career in medicine at a young age, having been greatly motivated after a doctor who treated his ill mother exhibited exceptional professionalism and warmth in his bedside manner. Among the highlights of his career, he is proud of his ability to adapt to any scenario and connect with others, as he was able to improve procedures that reduced morbidity, lowered time expenditure, and aided in achieving positive outcomes. Looking toward the future, Dr. Fuentes-Alburo hopes to advance into an executive medical position and transfer to a branch where he can enact greater change in his field.
