Dr. Probst’s role involves conducting root-cause analyses with his team to prevent patient harm and overseeing teams responsible for maintaining the quality of care across various service lines, including pharmacy and laboratory services.

A career journey marked by significant milestones, Dr. Probst previously enjoyed a tenure at Baylor Scott & White Health in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Texas. From 2016 to 2023, he excelled as a director of human factors and clinical operations. He initially joined Baylor Scott in 2011 as a human factors specialist and then became a senior human factors specialist from 2014 to 2016. Dr. Probst’s time with the organization included leading enterprise projects to transform health care environments into high-reliability systems, with a particular focus on eradicating hospital-acquired infections, conditions, and sentinel events.

Dr. Probst’s academic achievements have been instrumental in his professional success. His educational journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in experimental psychology from Texas Tech University in 2006, followed by a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in cognitive engineering with a focus on human factors from Wichita State University in 2009 and 2011, respectively. While pursuing his education, Dr. Probst was a graduate intern at Lockheed Martin Corporation in Houston, Texas, where he gained valuable experience. Furthermore, he received a Master of Science in health care leadership and management from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2019. In addition to his formal education, he has been a certified professional in patient safety by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement since 2018.

As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Probst’s scholarly contributions include co-authoring several peer-reviewed articles and authoring book chapters that explore various aspects of human factors engineering and its applications in health care.

Active in his professional community, Dr. Probst has been affiliated with the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society for over 15 years and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society for over 10 years. He also actively engaged in civic activities and community service. He has been active with the National Patient Safety Foundation since 2016, a nonprofit organization that strives to advance the safety of health care workers and patients, and publicize strategies to prevent harm. He also volunteers at local animal shelters, supports initiatives for the unhoused population through his children’s high school, and participates in youth group activities at his church. These commitments reflect Dr. Probst’s dedication to making a positive impact both within and outside the health care sector.

Throughout his career, Dr. Probst has been recognized for his contributions to the field of human factors engineering and patient safety. He has received numerous accolades, including a Safety Award for his work on the cardiac universal bed unit project and second place for the Innovation of the Year Award from Masimo. 

Looking ahead, Dr. Probst is committed to advancing standardization in health care to enhance patient safety and improve care quality while protecting health care staff from emotional distress associated with medical errors. He aims to implement system changes that prevent errors from affecting patients and is dedicated to promoting human factors engineering across health care systems nationwide.
