Dr. Munkarah has established a distinguished career in the medical field, marked by his leadership roles and significant contributions to health care. As the president of clinical enterprise and chief physician executive at Henry Ford Health since 2024, he oversees clinical operations and strategic direction while focusing on improving health care delivery, patient outcomes and operational efficiency. Dr. Munkarah’s role involves collaboration with health care professionals, administrators and academic institutions to enhance the quality of care.

Before his present work, Dr. Munkarah was the president of the care delivery system at Henry Ford Health from 2023 to 2024. During this time, he played a pivotal role in ensuring quality health care delivery, enhancing the quality of care and patient safety, and exceeding patients’ expectations during their stay. Between 2018 and 2024, Dr. Munkarah excelled as the organization’s chief clinical officer and executive vice president, where he was instrumental in leading initiatives that improved patient care and operational processes, such as innovative clinical care programs and medical staff expansion and engagement. Earlier in his career, he was the chief medical officer at Henry Ford Hospital and Henry Ford Medical Group from 2016 to 2018 and the women’s health department chair between 2008 and 2018.

Dr. Munkarah’s career began as the gynecologic oncology division director and multidisciplinary team leader at the Karmanos Cancer Center at Wayne State University from 2000 to 2005. He also chaired obstetrics and gynecology at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between 2008 and 2008.

In addition to his professional roles, Dr. Munkarah has been committed to education, which is evident through his involvement in various academic institutions to improve health care standards for future professionals. He has remained a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Wayne State University since 2005. He has also been a professor at Michigan State University in the college of human medicine since 2021.

Dr. Munkarah received a Bachelor of Science, with high distinction, in 1981 and a Doctor of Medicine, with distinction, in 1985 from the American University of Beirut. Subsequently, he completed the obstetrics and gynecology residency program at the school of medicine at Wayne State University from 1988 to 1992. Dr. Munkarah’s expertise in gynecologic oncology was further honed through his clinical training at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center between 1992 and 1995.

Dr. Munkarah’s achievements have been recognized through numerous awards, including being named one of Crain’s Michigan Healthcare Heroes in 2021 and as a Crain’s 2024 Notable Leader in Healthcare. He was also honored with the Excellence in Healthcare Award by the Arab American and Chaldean Council in 2022 and the Academic and Community Leadership Award from the National Arab American Medical Association in 2022.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Munkarah is actively involved in civic organizations. He has been a member of the board of directors for Health Alliance Plan since 2019, where he chairs the quality committee. He also began serving as a board trustee for Lawrence Technological University in 2025. Additionally, Dr. Munkarah has been a board member for Haven and has participated in multiple task forces, work groups, and other professional boards and committees.

Dr. Munkarah attributes his success to several key influences, including his parents, who instilled a passion for learning and helping others. His journey into medicine was driven by a love for science and a desire to impact others’ lives. Overcoming challenges such as relocating during a civil war has shaped his resilience and determination. Looking ahead, Dr. Munkarah aims to enhance health care standards, eliminate health disparities, improve education for future health care professionals, advance patient-centric care, and address cost issues within the sector.
