Throughout his tenure in this role, Dr. Stahlschmidt has focused on treating couples with various issues, such as infidelity, self-esteem, and marital and relationship conflict. He also excels in treating patients suffering from anxiety, trauma, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorders and is an expert in men’s issues, which has been a core focus of his practice. Dr. Stahlschmidt offers both individual psychotherapy and group counseling. His focus is to help eliminate dysfunction and develop healthier relationships. Before his tenure in the U.S., Dr. Stahlschmidt spent many years as a psychologist in his native Germany.
Describing himself as an interactive therapist, Dr. Stahlschmidt uses a variety of concepts and methods to garner success, including attachment theory, relational psychoanalytic paradigm, differentiation approach and systems theory. He also relies on new ideas from neurobiological research confirming humans’ innate desire for relatedness and safety. Dr. Stahlschmidt’s extensive training in these areas has been pivotal to the success of his patients.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Stahlschmidt has been affiliated with the PACT Institute LLC as a senior core faculty member and senior trainer since 2014. As such, he supports its mission to train therapists to help them feel more confident and effective in treating couples. PACT, which stands for Psychological Approach to Couple Therapy, is an approach that was developed by Dr. Stan Tatkin and includes a combination of attachment theory, developmental neuroscience and arousal regulation for treating the most challenging couples. Notably, Dr. Stahlschmidt’s wife is also a psychologist and trainer at the PACT Institute LLC.
Possessing a rich educational background, Dr. Stahlschmidt studied at Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen in Tübingen, Germany, earning an undergraduate degree in psychology in 1972 and a Master of Science in psychology in 1976. Continuing his studies, he later acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, California, in 1996 while working full-time. Highly qualified in his field, Dr. Stahlschmidt also received credentials as a certified PACT therapist. He is fluent in German and English.
Dr. Stahlschmidt is active in his professional community as a member of the American Psychological Association, allowing him to remain at the forefront of his field. Besides this commitment, he has been involved in civic organizations and initiatives, such as the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Greenpeace International and the Sunrise Movement.
Grateful for his remarkable success, Dr. Stahlschmidt built a thriving family practice in the U.S. from the ground up after relocating from Germany. He attributes his prosperity to the unwavering support and guidance of several colleagues and mentors throughout his life, as well as the invaluable support of his wife throughout the years.
