Natalie Duyongco Uy, BSN, RN, CCM, CHC, senior hospital compliance analyst at UNC Health, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in regulatory compliance.

Born in the Philippines, Ms. Uy originally intended to pursue a business degree before her mother encouraged her to consider becoming a nurse. She began her career in her home country as a staff nurse at Cebu Velez General Hospital. Ms. Uy immigrated to the United States in 1987, joining her older sister, who was already practicing as a nurse. She became a staff nurse at WakeMed Medical Center that same year. Concurrently with that role, Ms. Uy gained experience in the intersection of law and health care as a medical legal consultant for Michal & Jones Law Firm. She contributed as a staff nurse at Raleigh Community Hospital for several years.

In 1994, Ms. Uy returned to the WakeMed system, accepting the position of admissions and marketing representative at WakeMed Rehabilitation Hospital and later case coordinator and case manager for WakeMed Medical Center. In these roles, she established herself as an essential part of the WakeMed team by conducting patient evaluations, collaborating across departments, conducting conferences with health care providers, and connecting patients and nurses with necessary resources. Across a continuous tenure of more than 20 years with WakeMed, Ms. Uy served as a denial management team lead, patient access supervisor and patient access manager. In 2015, she joined UNC Health as a hospital compliance analyst, overseeing hospital-wide processes to ensure they complied with state and federal laws and agency regulations. Ms. Uy continued in this direction in 2021, when she was promoted to her current role of senior hospital compliance analyst at UNC Health. Among her many accomplishments throughout her professional life, she is particularly proud of having played a major part in developing a successful digital health care management program.

Ms. Uy’s performance in the field was born of her academic journey. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, graduating cum laude from the Velez School of Nursing in the Philippines in 1985. Following that and after moving to the United States, Ms. Uy continued her education with a number of certifications. She completed training in Six Sigma with Vanderbilt University in 2007, in admission/discharge/transfer (ADT) and hospital revenue cycle readiness with Epic in 2013, and in the Lean Process with Kaizen in 2017. Ms. Uy is certified in health care compliance through the Health Care Compliance Association, in hospital registration and revenue cycle readiness through Epic, and as a case manager through the Case Management Society of America. She is a registered nurse in North Carolina.

Noted for her achievements in the field, Ms. Uy has received several notable accolades. She placed in the top five during her nursing board exam in the Philippines. Demonstrating those skills in practice, Ms. Uy was presented with the Outstanding Employee Award by WakeMed Health & Hospitals. When considering the reasons behind her success, she points to her humbleness and drive to constantly improve herself and learn new things, as well as her strong faith. Ms. Uy is grateful for the many mentors who have supported her through successes and setbacks alike. She hopes to serve as a role model for others in the nursing field, especially immigrants, by showcasing how hard work pays off.

Outside of her career, Ms. Uy enjoys reading and spending time with her friends and extended family, including 9 siblings and 14 nieces and nephews. Looking ahead, she plans to continue specializing within the health care field as a data analyst. Ms. Uy has also started exploring artificial intelligence and hopes to be ahead of the curve in how this emerging technology can enhance her performance. She remains dedicated to proactively aiding UNC Health with compliance, addressing issues before they become more significant problems. With that in mind, Ms. Uy also looks to expand her digital offerings, building more data dashboards and collaborating with other organizations.
