With nearly a decade and a half of experience to her credit, Ms. Khan has established a successful career in mental health care, specializing in trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder. Since 2017, she has served as the founder, owner, and director of clinical services at Breakthrough Mental Health Counseling PLLC. In this role, she manages a caseload, seeing patients aged 13 and up regularly, while also handling numerous administrative tasks and mentoring and supervising interns. Her previous experience includes working as a psychotherapist at The Vida Guidance Center from 2016 to 2017, 2nd Arc Psychiatric Associates from 2015 to 2016, Roosevelt Mental Health Clinic in 2015, and Peninsula Counseling Center from 2014 to 2015. Earlier in her career, she served as a clinical associate at St. John’s University in 2014, respite specialist at Human First Inc. from 2010 to 2013, and gained valuable experience as a clinical mental health counseling intern at The Holliswood Hospital in 2013, and a psychology intern at both Creedmoor Psychiatric Center and HeartShare Preschool in 2010.

Reflecting on her path, Ms. Khan earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from St. John’s University in 2011 and a Master of Education in clinical mental health counseling, graduating summa cum laude in 2013. She is a licensed mental health counselor and a member of New York State Mensa International, the Chi Sigma Iota Honor Society, the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Student Association, and Delta Phi Epsilon International Sorority, and received Certificates of Appreciation from St. John’s University. She founded her solo practice in 2017, which gradually expanded into a group practice by 2019. Before establishing her own practice, she gained extensive experience working as a therapist in outpatient treatment centers. Although she initially pursued a PhD, she eventually realized her true passion was her private practice.

Ms. Khan takes great pride in establishing Breakthrough Mental Health Counseling and the positive impact it has on the community. Transitioning from working for someone else to running her own business was a major milestone in her career. She credits much of her success to her immigrant parents, who worked tirelessly to support her education and career journey, as well as to her younger sister, who has been a crucial source of support, especially during her divorce. She is also driven by her passion for helping others every day. In the coming years, she envisions expanding her company to reach as many people as possible, ensuring that quality mental health services are accessible to everyone in the community. She also aims to increase public advocacy for mental health awareness and treatment. In her personal time, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and staying active.
