Combining her expertise in music therapy with a robust understanding of psychological development, she is responsible for staff training, developing enrichment interventions, and supervising the Life Enrichment team in this position. Dr. Wellman additionally engages in community outreach by conducting educational sessions and supporting initiatives revolving around dementia-related causes.

Dr. Wellman embarked upon her professional path at Hiram College, from which she earned a Bachelor of Arts in music history and theory, with a concentration in oboe performance in 1993. She continued her academic pursuits with a Master of Music in music therapy at Ohio University in 1997. She eventually concluded her studies at Capella University in 2007, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in educational psychology with a specialization in lifespan development. In addition to her formal education, she has obtained numerous certifications that enhance her professional capabilities, including as a dementia practitioner and Alzheimer’s disease and dementia care trainer from the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners in 2020 and 2023, respectively. Dr. Wellman further garnered designations as a neurologic music therapy fellow from the Robert Unkefer Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy in 2019, a TIME techniques master practitioner from the International Board of Coaches and Practitioners in 2022, a master hypnotherapist, master neurolinguistic programmer, and a master success and life coach.

Prior to her current role at Lumina Las Vegas, Dr. Wellman was active as a music therapist at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health between 2017 and 2023, where she co-developed and trademarked the Rhythmic Reminiscence program, an innovative therapeutic approach that garnered widespread acclaim for its effectiveness. She previously served as an adjunct professor at Ivy Tech Community College from 2009 to 2023, an instructor at the University of Phoenix from 2012 to 2015, an adjunct faculty member at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis in 2014, a developmental specialist at B. Well Therapy and Wellness from 2015 to 2016, and a music therapist at Valley Hospital Medical Center from 2015 to 2018. Dr. Wellman began her career as the owner and lead therapist of Wellman Therapy Services, Inc. from 2005 to 2015.

Moreover, Dr. Wellman has contributed as a volunteer with such organizations as Dementia Friendly Southern Nevada, the Parkinson Foundation Moving Day Committee, and the Huntington’s Disease Society of America. She has also been appointed to the board of Veteran LYFE Services, where she has been involved in grant writing and program development. Her dedication to community service extends to her participation in the Smith Center Sensory Friendly Committee and her volunteer work as a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant researcher with the Benjamin Rose Institute. Dr. Wellman is also a prolific writer, having authored numerous journal articles, blog entries for the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association from 2012 to 2015, and the book “Truthful Tips for Dementia Caregivers” in 2022.

Dr. Wellman’s achievements have been recognized with several accolades, including the Hearts of Gold Award and recognition as the Rising Star for Innovative and Exemplary Respite Programming from the National Respite Network & Resource Center. She attributes her success to her education, a desire for continuous improvement, and an unwavering commitment to advancing her field. Dr. Wellman prides herself on her ability to innovate, particularly through the development of the Rhythmic Reminiscence program, which remains a highlight of her career.

Looking to the future, Dr. Wellman aims to expand her impact by training more professionals beyond her immediate team and enhancing community education through training, consulting, and raising awareness about dementia care. She also hopes to complete her third book, which will showcase a deeper focus on memory care. Likewise, Dr. Wellman continues to be a driving force in her field, dedicated to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those she serves.
