With nearly a decade and a half of experience to his credit, Dr. Chaturvedi has succeeded in the field of pharmaceuticals, specializing in drug development, entrepreneurship, fundraising, corporate alliance management, and international regulatory experience. He currently excels as the co-founder and interim chief executive officer at Oceanyx Pharmaceuticals, a drug discovery and development company focused on leveraging marine cyanobacteria-based natural product research, a role he has held since 2011. He has also served as president and chief executive officer of Pivot Pharmaceuticals since 2015. Pivot Pharmaceuticals is an emerging biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing therapeutic pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals.
Since 2007, Dr. Chaturvedi has also been chief scientific officer of Napo Pharmaceuticals, a company focused on developing and commercializing plant-based medicines for gastrointestinal health and other indications. He also held roles at IndUS Pharmaceuticals, a privately held, US-India cross-border pharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of innovative drugs. He was the chief executive officer from 2010 to 2015 and chairman and chief executive officer from 2005 to 2007. Additionally, from 2001 to 2004, he was president and chief executive officer of Scion Pharmaceuticals Inc., a privately held biotechnology company that specializes in ion channel drug discovery and development, focusing primarily on treatments for central nervous system disorders and cardiovascular diseases.
Dr. Chaturvedi’s earlier positions included senior director at Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated from 1994 to 2001 and senior director at the same company from 1994 to 2001. Vertex is dedicated to discovering, developing, and commercializing innovative medicines for serious diseases, particularly those underserved by existing therapies. He was also pharmacokinetic at Alkermes PLC, a global biopharmaceutical company focused on developing innovative treatments for complex and difficult-to-treat psychiatric and neurological disorders, from 1993 to 1994. Laying a solid foundation for his future success, he pursued an education at the University of Mumbai, earning a Bachelor of Pharmacy in 1983. After immigrating to the US, he went on to earn a PhD from West Virginia University in 1988.
Reflecting on his career, Dr. Chaturvedi recalls he had been interested in the medical field from a young age. He came to the United States not necessarily to make money but to make a positive impact on people’s lives. He said that although he was interested in medicine, the practice has become very limited and has been gerrymandered to managed care as opposed to treating the patient. As a pharmacologist, he discovered his niche, making medicine that could address disease progression by managing, stabilizing, or even reversing the disease. He takes great pride in working in drug development and being an entrepreneur in the biotech industry.
Dr. Chaturvedi attributes his success to having great mentors who have been very supportive of his career. In addition, he credits his parents, who are his inspiration and motivation and instilled a great work ethic in him. In the coming years, he is dedicated to continuing his work in the field and developing more life-saving drugs. Currently, his focus is on rare pediatric gastrointestinal diseases, pancreatic cancer, and ovarian cancer. He advises aspiring professionals not to be afraid to fail and to reach out and collaborate and find alignment.
