Currently, he excels as a senior medical science liaison at GRAIL, a health care company pioneering new technologies to advance early cancer detection, a role he has held since 2023.  In this position, he engages, educates, and supports providers on the proper utilization of Galleri and other Grail products. His responsibilities include identifying clinical trial sites, reading and educating on their diagnostic platform, and helping physicians understand multicancer early detection.

Prior to this position, Dr. McHenry was active as a medical science liaison and director for NET and Radiosensitive Tumors in Oncology at Novartis AG from 2021 to 2023. He also served as a medical science liaison at Advanced Accelerator Applications from 2020 to 2021 and as a medical science liaison II at Genentech from 2017 to 2020. Previously, he was an oncology medical science liaison at AstraZeneca from 2015 to 2017, a research investigator at MetaStat from 2014 to 2015, and a research scientist at Astellas Pharma from 2011 to 2013. He began his career as a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where he honed his skills and laid the foundation for his distinguished career in oncology research.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. McHenry pursued an education at the University of Dallas, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1997. He continued his academic efforts at the University of Illinois Chicago, obtaining a PhD in biochemistry in 2006. Following these accomplishments, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 2008. He further advanced his expertise as a presidential postdoctoral fellow at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, Novartis AG, in 2011.

In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. McHenry remains affiliated with various professional organizations. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research, maintaining his involvement and contributing to the advancement of oncology research.

In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. McHenry has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was recognized with the Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, Novartis AG, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Throughout his career, Dr. McHenry’s most notable achievement is his participation in what are known as “practice-changing clinical trials.” While at Genentech, he was deeply involved in a liver cancer combination trial, from its inception to its conclusion. His responsibilities included identifying clinical trial sites, conducting site initiation visits, and performing regular follow-up visits until the final approval was secured. Additionally, he found it immensely rewarding to work on new molecules and treatment paradigms at Novartis, which significantly impacted prostate cancer treatment. 

Looking ahead, Dr. McHenry aims to have a broader impact on his organization by engaging in mentorship programs and taking on more leadership roles. His dedication to medicine and helping those who are ill drives his passion for being a significant voice in cancer research.
