Sherrie L. Burkholder, MSHA, BSN, RNC-OB, C-EFM, Nursing Director for the Women’s and Newborn Center at Southern Maryland Hospital Center, part of MedStar Health, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Healthcare Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nursing administration.

With decades of experience to her credit, Ms. Burkholder has excelled as the nursing director for the Women’s and Newborn Center at Southern Maryland Hospital Center, part of MedStar Health, since 2023. Prior to this position, she was active as the unit director for obstetrics, labor and delivery with UPMC Western Maryland from 2020 to 2022 and a clinical education program manager for obstetrics at Howard County General Hospital from 2022 to 2023. Between 2007 and 2020, she worked for Adventist HealthCare as a nurse manager for obstetrics, labor and delivery at Shady Grove Medical Center and a manager of quality and informatics. Ms. Burkholder also contributed to Washington County Hospital as the clinical manager for ortho/neuro/trauma services from 2003 to 2005 and the clinical manager for the pediatric and women’s medical surgical unit and outpatient infusion center from 2005 to 2007.

Ms. Burkholder previously served as a patient care coordinator for Healthy Homecomings from 1995 to 1997 and a nurse manager for Chambersburg Hospital from 1999 to 2002. She found success in a number of posts at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center between 1989 and 1999, including as the clinical head nurse of obstetrics, a childbirth educator, and an assistant nurse manager. She began her career as a staff nurse and charge nurse at Miners Memorial Hospital from 1983 to 1988. Ms. Burkholder was drawn to her field after being exposed to the healthcare industry by the parents of a close friend during her youth.

Before embarking on her professional path, Ms. Burkholder pursued an education at the Reading Hospital School of Nursing, from which she earned a diploma in nursing in 1980. Following this accomplishment, she obtained her certification as a registered nurse in inpatient obstetric nursing from the National Certification Corporation in 1985. She continued her academic efforts with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of St. Francis in 1992. Ms. Burkholder concluded her studies at the University of St. Francis in 1996, graduating with a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration.

Beyond her primary responsibilities, Ms. Burkholder has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her immediate circles. Since 2010, she has been part of a host family for international students with the Broadfording Christian Academy. She has also thrived with the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses as an instructor of advanced and intermediate fetal heart monitoring, an instructor of the neonatal resuscitation program, an instructor in the S.T.A.B.L.E. program, an original instructor in the obstetrics patient safety course, and an active member for more than 35 years. Moreover, Ms. Burkholder is an avid dance enthusiast, having dedicated her time and attention to the art form as an assistant instructor at a local dance studio and a competitive dancer in dance types such as jazz and ballet.

Ms. Burkholder has attributed her success to her upbringing as a military child in a close-knit family, as her parents instilled in her the importance of exhibiting values of social responsibility and empathy. Among the highlights of her career, she is incredibly proud of having been elected as the Maryland section leader for the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses over the course of four consecutive years, a tenure in which she has significantly improved the healthcare community within the state. In the coming years, Ms. Burkholder hopes to continue working in her present position until her eventual retirement, at which point she will devote her spare time to traveling alongside her husband.
