Jennifer L. Furlow, LCSW-S, Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Brooke Army Medical Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Healthcare Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in social work and mental health services.
With many years of experience to her credit, Ms. Furlow has excelled as a licensed clinical social worker operating out of the Brooke Army Medical Center since 2023. In this position, she ensures that her clients receive access to resources and services that initiate discussions surrounding trauma while providing timely referrals to necessary therapists and conducting assessments regarding substance abuse. Ms. Furlow previously worked in similar posts at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center, during which time she focused on a specialized clinical program dedicated to mitigating suicidal tendencies among male inmates facing serious charges such as capital murder and sex offenses, as well as with University Health.
To support her professional ambitions, Ms. Furlow pursued an education at The University of Texas at San Antonio, from which she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a Master of Social Work. The first woman in her family to obtain an undergraduate and master’s degree, she notably concluded her studies while completing an internship and simultaneously maintaining full-time employment. Likewise, she was honorably elected as the student speaker of her graduating class at the University of Texas at San Antonio. In addition to these accomplishments, Ms. Furlow garnered her license as a clinical social worker and her certifications in individualized skills and socialization, dialectical behavior training, and cognitive behavioral therapy from the State of Texas.
In light of her impressive undertakings, Ms. Furlow has accrued several accolades throughout her career. On multiple occasions, she has been nominated for Awards for Dedicated Contributions as an Exemplary Employee by the Bexar County Adult Detention Center Adult Detention Center. Driven by her inherent altruism, she is incredibly proud that none of her patients have attempted suicide despite their impulsive dispositions and severe trauma. Ms. Furlow has attributed her success to her upbringing, as her nurturing grandmother instilled in her a sense of independence, humility, and the ability to persevere through life’s challenges.
Initially drawn to a career in biology and medicine, Ms. Furlow was drawn to social work after she took a leave from her academic efforts to care for her grandmother, who had been diagnosed with dementia and required assistance from a hospice social worker. Among the highlights of her career, she is incredibly proud of her bilingual proficiency, which allows her to interact with individuals navigating complex immigration processes, as well as her ability to remain well-informed and adept in the practical aspects of her field through diligent research. In the coming years, Ms. Furlow hopes to establish a geriatric program in partnership with one of the surgeons at Brooke Army Medical Center, develop training programs tailored for military social workers, and expand her supervision program for students who may not have the financial means to seek continued education.
