Ms. McCarter is a distinguished professional who has excelled in the field of addiction recovery for over three decades. She has been in long-time self-recovery, which has helped her succeed in her career. She has served many prestigious organizations, such as Stepping Stone to Recovery between 1989 and 2003, as the lead counselor at Brookhaven Retreat between 2005 and 2007, as the owner and clinical director of White Spirit Lodge between 2007 and 2011, as a treatment specialist at the East Tennessee Human Resource Agency between 2010 and 2015, as the program director at the Serenity Centers of Tennessee between 2015 and 2018, and as the director of Stepping Stone to Recovery between 2021 and 2023. She presently owns and directs L&M Counseling and L&M Consulting, where she has thrived since 2018.
Attributing her success to being open-minded and having a passion for learning, Ms. McCarter utilized these assets to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Lubbock School of Nursing in 1980. In 1992, she obtained licensure as an addiction counselor. She credits a willingness to accept things as they are and not as she wanted them to be, along with her spiritual connection, which has led to the longevity of her career.
Ms. McCarter participates as an active member of the Fireside Sobriety Circle, Alcoholics Anonymous, and the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors. She was recognized as the Professional of the Year in 2014, as a Marquis Who’s Who of Professional Women, and was featured in Millenium Magazine. She was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the East Tennessee Association of Addiction Professionals in 2016. Between 2013 and 2014, she acted as president of the East Tennessee Association for Addiction Professionals
In the coming years, Ms. McCarter intends to continue in her current position where she is most effective and will eventually retire. She has a powerful spiritual connection and aims to help clients find a connection as well. Coming from a supportive family, she has grown from a personal journey of drinking and drug addiction for 16 years to being sober for 34 years. When she is not working, she dedicates her time and attention to her spiritual endeavors by praying in the sweat lodge.
