She began her career as an administrative director of nursing at Union Memorial Hospital from 1981 to 2019. Concurrently, she served as an assistant administrator and director of nursing and patient care services at Fredonia Regional Hospital from 1986 to 1998 and at the Sisters of St. Joseph Halstead Hospital from 1988 to 1990.
Ms. Kuhlmann worked as a risk manager, quality assurance liaison, family nurse practitioner, and psychiatric-mental health advanced practice registered nurse working in the Psychiatry Mental Health division of the Robert Dole Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center from 1991 to 1998. She garnered a stellar reputation as founder, chief executive officer, family nurse practitioner, psychiatric-mental health advanced practice registered nurse, advanced practice registered nurse, and legal nurse consultant at Associates in HealthCare from 1998 to 2008. She established herself as a clinical assistant professor, specialty coordinator, and family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences College of Nursing from 2008 to 2013.
Before embarking on her professional path, Ms. Kuhlmann pursued an education at the University of Arkansas where she completed pre-nursing coursework between 1970 and 1972. She continued her academic efforts at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1975. At Wichita State University, she accrued a Master of Science in Nursing in 1995 before concluding her studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing and graduating with a Doctor of Nurse Practitioner in 2014. She holds certifications as a registered nurse, a family nurse practitioner, an advanced practice registered nurse, a psychiatric mental health clinical nurse specialist (adult), and a legal nurse consultant. She is currently pursuing a nurse licensure compact.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Ms. Kuhlmann has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. She found success with the two textbooks on advance family nurse practitioners which she co-authored. In addition to her primary vocation, she remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She was a member of the Georgia Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, and the National Veterans Affairs Committee.
In light of her impressive undertakings, Ms. Kuhlmann has accrued several accolades throughout her career. She won all of her cases as a legal nurse consultant for her private practice, participated in writing the clinical practice guidelines for sleep apnea and insomnia for the National VA Committee, and developed the first diabetes patient education program for Memphis Methodist Hospital. She was a five-time recipient of the CARE Awards from the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Health Care System.
