Supported by over five decades of expertise in mental health care, continuing education and drug counseling, Dr. Lawrence T. Clayton excelled as a licensed psychologist at his own agency, Lawrence T. Clayton and Counseling Associates Inc. from 1984 to 2002, when he sold his facility licensed with the Pennsylvania Department of Health for Drug and Alcohol Out-Patient Counseling. He then joined the Child, Adult and Family Psychological Center as an independent associate between 2002 and 2020, continuing his practice of substance abuse counseling, Throughout the course of his career, he has lent his wealth of knowledge to several entities, including Pennsylvania State University as an Adjunct Professor of Counseling Psychology for nearly 20 years and the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Substance Abuse Professional for nearly a decade.

Earlier, Dr. Clayton commenced his professional path as a Clinical Psychology Specialist in the Mental Hygiene Consultation Division of the U.S. Army after being drafted during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1969. Following his military service were tenures as a research assistant at Hollins College and the University of Pennsylvania. He also served as a child care supervisor at Edgemeade of Virginia, a rehabilitation counselor and workshop supervisor of the Hyannis Branch of Nauset Workshop, and a Staff Psychologist in the outpatient department of the Cape Cod Mental Health Center, where he later excelled as Principal Psychologist. Likewise, Dr. Clayton was a course instructor in the Division of Continuing Education at Cape Cod Community Colleges. including course instructor on Martha’s Vineyard Island.

A licensed psychologist with both US. and international certification as an advanced specialist in substance abuse and addiction counseling, Dr. Clayton holds a BA in psychology from Indiana University Bloomington, an MA in general psychology from Hollins College and a PhD in Counseling Psychology from Pennsylvania State University. Among the highlights of his career, Dr. Clayton is especially proud of helping establish the Athletic Assistance Program at Pennsylvania State University. Looking forward, he intends to continue services through consultations and presentations to the public as well as professionals regarding “Understanding the Process of Addiction: A 21st Century Update.”
