Title: Physician Assistant
Company: Lutheran Health Systems
Location: Union Lake, Michigan, United States
Melody Shaw, Physician Assistant at Lutheran Health Systems, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in patient care.
After excelling as a respiratory therapist and a teacher in the Detroit public schools and earning a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in 2006, Ms. Shaw has subsequently provided superior care as a physician’s assistant with Lutheran Health Systems and DuPont Hospital. As part of her responsibilities, she practices medicine on teams with physicians, surgeons, and other healthcare workers and examines, diagnoses and treats patients. Ms. Shaw is Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C) by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
Ms. Shaw credits her father, Willie Shaw, a former U.S. Army pilot who flew wounded and fallen soldiers, for giving her the foundation of what professionalism, excellence and service should look like in her life. One of his friends was a combat medic who became a physician assistant. When she was working as a respiratory therapist, his father’s friend convinced her to take a step further by joining the same field, and she believed that her previous career and life experiences prepared her to join that profession. As a career highlight, Ms. Shaw prides herself on contributing to the collaborative effort of her colleagues in saving the lives of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Seeing them walk out of the hospital with their relieved family members gave her immense joy. In the coming years, Ms. Shaw would like to manage a medical center with the help of other professionals. Part of her goal is to provide a means for promoting her field and mentoring the next generation by opening a physician assistant school.
