Katy Nelson, MS, Occupational Health and Safety Program Coordinator at SGS, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in occupational health.

With more than 13 years of professional experience, Mrs. Nelson thrives in her current role, leading safety audits of laboratories and assisting in hazard communications programs. She focuses her attention on where to send waste, how to label and properly store chemicals, tracking lasers and robotics, risk assessment, noise monitoring, industrial hygiene and chemical sampling. Prior to joining SGS, she gained valuable expertise as a research and development, environmental health and safety delivery technician with Kelly Services from 2020 to 2021 and as a consulting specialist with BSI from 2019 until 2020. Before transitioning her career focus to industrial hygiene and safety, she excelled for nearly 10 years working in various positions in the oil and gas industry, developing a strong background in analytical and biological sciences.

To broaden her future opportunities in the workforce, Mrs. Nelson earned a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry at Texas State University in 2009. Determined to expand her career options, she obtained a master’s degree in occupational safety and health from the University of Houston-Clear Lake in 2019. She subsequently received Associate Safety and Health Manager Certification from the Institute for Safety and Health Management in 2019.

Mrs. Nelson began her career as a laboratory technician at bp in Texas City from 2009 to 2013. When Marathon bought the refinery in 2013, Mrs. Nelson briefly functioned as a learning and development consultant. In 2014, she returned to the laboratory as a lab technician until 2015. At the end of 2015, she worked as a research and development laboratory technician at Shell Oil Company until 2017. While working full time at Bureau Veritas as a laboratory analyst Katy went to grad school at night. In 2019, Mrs. Nelson achieved her goal of attaining a job in the health and safety field as an industrial hygiene consulting specialist for BSI EHS Services and Solutions, where she garnered expertise in various fields of health and safety. Much of her corporate safety experience comes from her time as a EHS delivery technician at Kelly Services on behalf of the Dow Chemical Company.

Since 2021, Mrs. Nelson has found much success as an occupational health and safety program coordinator at SGS North America. In this capacity, she is responsible for auditing laboratory processes, team meetings, implementing new programs, policies, and procedures, assisting in labeling, and properly storing chemicals, risk assessments, industrial hygiene sampling including noise monitoring and laser safety, to name only a few of her duties.

Long dedicated to civic advocacy, Mrs. Nelson has contributed her time and services to the Houston Delta Gamma Foundation and as a STEM volunteer for schools. She attributes mush of her success to her willingness to help workers perform their job tasks safely to her experience of being a worker in her previous career. Among her professional accomplishments,  Mrs. Nelson is gratified to have changed her specialty from the oil and gas industry to the technology industry, thereby proudly serving by her motto: “there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.”
