Title: Senior Industrial Hygienist
Company:  Cornell University
Location: Cortland, New York, United States

Jennifer Whittaker, Senior Industrial Hygienist at Cornell University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in monitoring industrial and environmental workplace conditions.

After serving as an intern with the Walt Disney World College Program at Animal Kingdom in Orlando, Florida from 2003 to 2004, Ms. Whittaker obtained a Bachelor of Science in environmental science with a concentration in biology in 2006 from the Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. She subsequently earned a Master of Public Health from West Chester University of Pennsylvania in 2004. Ms. Whittaker is licensed as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene; as an AHERA Asbestos Inspector by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); and as an asbestos consultant, inspector, management planner and project designer by the City of Philadelphia Department of Public Health.

For over a decade, Ms. Whittaker has provided superior service as an industrial hygienist, a professional dedicated to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, communication, and control of environmental stressors in the workplace that may result in injury, illness, impairment, or otherwise affect the well-being of workers and community members. After beginning her career as an industrial hygienist with Criterion Labs Inc. in 2007, she excelled as safety and health expert at 1Source Safety and Health, Inc. in Lionville-Marchwood, Pennsylvania from 2008 to 2013 and as a regional industrial hygiene delivery specialist from 2014 to 2020 with the Dow Chemical Company.

Since April 2020, Ms. Whittaker has prospered as a senior industrial hygienist for the Environment, Health and Safety Department at Cornell University to help address and manage the response to COVID-19. In this position, she immediately became responsible for training more than 8,000 university essential workers and employees who were required to work during the pandemic. She likewise developed and influenced decisions regarding respiratory protection, mask mandates, ventilation, and disinfecting practices that allowed the aforementioned university to operate efficiently and effectively.

During her time with Dow Chemical, Ms. Whittaker worked in hygiene sampling and noise monitoring, which she found really interesting.  As she got through it, there was an opportunity that opened within Dow so she could get more into management and influential parts of industrial hygiene. As a career highlight, she was able to overhaul Dow Chemical’s conservation program within a year to a year and a half in one of the sites where she worked. It was a huge group effort in which there were six or seven environmental health and safety technologists who assisted with the project. While her team was executing close to 500 samples, she acquired the results, interpreted them and made recommendations.

A member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists and the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, Ms. Whittaker has contributed her wealth of expertise to Habitat for Humanity and serves the Day of Caring organization with United Way. In the coming years, she is committed to improving her skills and continuing her work on projects related to industrial hygiene and safety with Cornell University.
