Dr. Steven Wachtel

Title: Forensic Psychiatric Social Worker
Company: Kingsboro Psychiatric Center
Location: New York, New York, United States

Steven Wachtel, Forensic Psychiatric Social Worker at Kingsboro Psychiatric Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in counseling and social work.

After initially obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1970 from Yeshiva University, Dr. Wachtel followed with a Master of Social Work in 1972 from the Wurzweiler School Social Work at Yeshiva University. He later continued his education with a Doctor of Philosophy in nutritional science from Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan in 2011.

From 1972 to 1991 and again from 2004 to the present, Dr. Wachtel has provided superior care as a psychiatric social worker with the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center in Brooklyn, where he is responsible for a psychiatric population of patients who have committed serious crimes in the community, who instead of going into prison were sent into a mental health system due to mental health issues. He spends two times within a week at the hospital, helping in preparing the patients to go back into the community, and does group therapies with the patients or individual therapy. In addition, Dr. Wachtel writes reports that apply for graduate privileges for the patients. He also made an impact as a team leader with the Mental Health Treatment Team at Kingsboro Psychiatric Center from 1991 to 2004.

Keenly enthusiastic about community affairs, Dr. Wachtel has served as an organizer with Washington Heights Community Services and has volunteered to teach reading in the New York City public schools.  He has published three volumes of poetry, “The Heart Keeps Asking Why,” “Above All, Myself” and “Journey.” In 1993, he was honored with the Martin Luther King Junior Humanitarian/Brotherhood Award.

Dr. Wachtel attributes his success to his parents’ encouragement and the way they raised him to be sensitive to those who have needs, as well as the love and support of his wife Maxine. His career highlight was during his time as an undergraduate, when he organized an award-winning group that tutored in public schools and also took the children on Sunday trips. Now enjoying retirement, Dr. Wachtel still counsels and works with children. Dr. Wachtel’s personal motto is “Any day that you did not help another person is a wasted one, and as if you have not lived that day at all.”
