Joan Mayo, Microbiologist at Hackensack Meridian Health Mountainside, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in infection control.
After obtaining a Master of Business Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Ms. Mayo pursued coursework for a PhD with New York University in 1984. As a microbiologist with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for 18 years and New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation for eight years, she studied the growth, interactions and characteristics of microscopic organisms such as bacteria, algae, fungi and different types of parasites.
Ms. Mayo subsequently provided superior service as an epidemiologist and infection control prevention specialist, Mountainside Hospital, now known as Hackensack Meridian Health Mountainside, in Montclair from 1995 to 2016. Her professional memberships include the Friends of Harlem Hospital, the North Bergen (New Jersey) Action Group, the American Society Microbiology, the American Public Health Association and Association Practitioners in Infection Control.
Dr. Mayo attributes her success to her deep sense of integrity. She considers her career highlight to be helping treat those suffering from AIDS and assisting to prevent AIDS infections. It was definitely a challenge that prepared her for everything she has done in the ensuing years. In the near future, she would like to publish a memoir and engage in some traveling.
