Julia D. Rhodes, Team Leader of Neurosurgery (Retired) at Athens Regional Medical Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in surgical nursing.
Ms. Rhodes’ lifelong dream was to become a surgical nurse. When she nine years old, she received vaccinations from Nurse Sippel and she was enthralled by how elegant she looked wearing her flight cap, white uniform and shoes. She brought that childhood dream to life through obtaining a diploma in nursing in 1964 and going on to work as a nurse at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. For nearly 40 years until 2003, Ms. Rhodes excelled as a team leader of neurosurgery at Athens Regional Medical Center, where she recalls the operating room afforded her what she sees as a fitting challenge that allowed her to grow professionally. Despite her retirement, she continued to work as a part-time nurse for six patients with Alzheimer’s disease from 2006 to 2011.
Upon reflection of her career, Ms. Rhodes notes a highlight of her everyday work was being called “The General” in the operating room. She attributes her success to her husband, who understood that her hospital life came first, as well as her faith in helping people. She grew up in a small town of 1,200 people with a mother who strongly believed in good work ethics, which inspired her to work hard all her life. Ms. Rhodes’ goals in the next five years is to remain as active as her mother, who lived 95 years. As long as she is healthy, she wants to continue helping her church, Beech Haven Baptist Church, and serving her community as much she can, providing her services to people who might need it.
