Driven by childhood experiences with clinical depression, Dr. Shook began working in institutional treatment facilities for people with intellectual disabilities during her studies toward a master’s degree. Glory is partially mute, and Kate attempts to solve the mystery of what happened to both her granddaughter and her daughter.

While Dr. Shook hopes to retire from full-time work by age 70, she intends to write more novels characterized by a mixture of mystery and her professional background.
