Heather E. Johnston, LCSW, Psychiatric Social Worker, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in community mental health.
Ms. Johnston is a licensed clinical social worker enjoying retirement after more than three decades of serving patients in community mental healthcare settings. Specializing in helping clients navigate the complex issues surrounding trauma, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and substance use disorders, Ms. Johnston often worked with families, children, and youth. An alumna of Stony Brook University, Ms. Johnston completed a Bachelor of Science in psychology in 1988 and a Master of Science in social work in 1990. Her interest in mental health and social services was lifelong, and she explains that she was “born this way” and considered mental healthcare to be “her true calling.”
She began her career at the Sagamore Children’s Psychiatric Center in 1988, and became a psychiatric social worker for Suffolk County, New York, and Community Mental Hygiene Services in 1991. Ms. Johnston continued to see patients at Community Mental Hygiene Services until 2010, when she entered private practice at a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Mental Health Clinic, where she would remain until her retirement in 2020. She credits her professional success to maintaining a positive attitude and an ability to celebrate patients’ victories rather than fixate on challenges, and considers it an honor to see her patients’ growth and progress over time.
