Dr. O’Connor is retired from dental practice after a 45-year career of dedicated service to his patients and profession. Inspired by his father’s career in dentistry and his own dual interests in science and the arts, Dr. O’Connor earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in 1975, after completing 3 years as a pre-med major at Kentucky State University, and prerequisite physics courses at University of Rochester. He completed a dental residency at Eastman Dental Center (now, Eastman Institute of Oral Health), and pursued additional externships in periodontics and oral surgery at Genesee Hospital and Milbank Health Ctr. Dr. O’Connor began his career as a provider in his father’s dental practice in 1976.
In 1979, Dr. O’Connor’s father, Dr. Lauriston O’Connor, established the dental corporation, L.E. O’Connor, DDS, PC. After 25 years of practice in Rochester, New York, he relocated his practice to Gates, New York, where he began studying the application of lasers in dentistry, thus becoming one of 300, or so, laser dentists in the U.S. At the new facility, Dr. O’Connor specialized in preventive and diagnostic care with cutting-edge laser applications- photo-acoustic disinfection of root canals, treatment of periodontal disease, cavity preparations without the need for local anesthesia; pain management techniques.
In addition to his private practice, Dr. O’Connor was a consulting provider for diverse patient populations at the Anthony L. Jordan Health Center, several general practice healthcare clinics, and the Westgate Nursing Home. In recognition of his career dedicated to service, Dr. O’Connor has been presented with numerous awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of General Dentistry, a lifetime membership in the 7th District Dental Society, and a Top Dentist Award from the Consumer Research Council.
“Family life is of utmost importance to me.” He is very proud of his grown offspring: Ashonte’ (Charlotte, NC), the eldest daughter, has a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious outlook on life. She works at Wells Fargo and Amazon. She is mother to Rodney’s 3 grandchildren: Brandon (25), wrestling and finance phenom in high school/college. Azariah is a senior at North Carolina State University, and possesses excellent culinary skills among other attributes. Zamien (19), lively and inventive, is studying musical percussion. Candice, also multi-talented, is the youngest daughter, who’s pursuing a master’s degree in Public Health at Binghamton University. Besides holding a double Black Belt in mixed martial arts, she is a fervent artist (candybeast.deviantart.com).
Dr. O’Connor has an inventive spirit and developed a sonic prototype mouth-cleansing tray that could help the elderly and infirmed, The Mouth Spa (InventHelp).
