Benjamin Cowles Hammett, PhD, Psychologist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in psychology.
Since the age of six, Dr. Hammett knew he wanted to become a psychologist. The idea stemmed from his experience at a family psychologist, as he was very impressed by everything the doctor had to say. In 1957, he earned a Bachelor of Science from Stanford University. Later, by 1969, he acquired a PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He proceeded to become a licensed psychologist in the state of California prior to beginning his career.
From 1965 until 1967, Dr. Hammett began his career as a staff psychologist at the Children’s Psychiatric Center in Butner, North Carolina. In the years that followed, he brought his skills to a number of different institutions. Until 1971, he worked for the VA Treatment Center for Children, going on to serve as an assistant professor of child psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University and as an instructor of psychology at the Western Graduate School of Psychology. All the while, he excelled as a clinical psychologist in private practice from 1972 until 1992.
In light of his many accomplishments, Dr. Hammett earned the Avenidas Lifetimes of Achievement Award in 2013. Earlier, in 1970, he was a grantee of the National Institute of Mental Health. Reflecting on his success, he considers the highlight of his career to be his work with alcoholics. It was consistently rewarding to be able to witness their recovery process. As a further testament to his success, Dr. Hammett is featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the West, and Who’s Who in the World.
