Dr. Daniels began her career when she least expected it. She was an institutionalized high school dropout battling anorexia when she wrote her first novel. It quickly became a bestseller, and her life turned upside down. Slowly but surely, she conquered her demons. In 1972, she earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Five years later, she had acquired a PhD in psychology, which additionally came from her alma mater. Since 1977, Dr. Daniels has excelled as a clinical psychologist with her private practice.
Since publishing her first novel, “Caleb My Son,” in 1956, Dr. Daniels has continued to demonstrate success as an author. In 1961, she published her second novel, “High on A Hill.” After a 40-year hiatus due to writer’s block and raising four children on her own, Dr. Daniels returned to writing in 2002 and published her memoir, “With a Woman’s Voice: A Writer’s Struggle for Emotional Freedom.” By 2005, she had published another novel, “The Eyes of the Father,” and a description of how to work through writer’s block, “Dreaming Your Way to Creative Freedom.” One year later, she published “Walking With Moonshine.” Dr. Daniels’ most recent publication is entitled “Maritime Magistery,” which was made public in 2016. Outside of literature, she contributed to a documentary movie about her life, titled “In So Many Words.”
As a testament to her abundant success, Dr. Daniels has earned the Guggenheim Award and the Elizabeth James Award. A member of the American Psychologist Association, she looks forward to continuing to write and publish her future works. She hopes to provide strength, positivity, and inspiration to those who pick up any of her books. As the founder of the Lucy Daniels Foundation and the Lucy Daniels Center for Early Childhood, she additionally plans to remain active as a clinical psychologist.
