Susan Kavaler-Adler, PhD, Clinical Psychologist and Psychoanalyst at the Object Relations Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in clinical psychology, psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.

Dr. Kavaler-Adler has been the founder, executive director and board president of the Object Relations Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in New York City since 1991. In her independent practice, she specializes in individual psychotherapy, couples and group psychotherapy, and groups for mourning, supervision, self-expression and writing. Renowned for her work in intensive psychotherapy, she works with all kinds of trauma, as well as mourning and grief, issues with creative self-expression, fear of success, self-sabotage, interpersonal communication and intimacy, with mourning as a developmental process, and with the Demon Lover Complex, among other areas. Likewise, she has leveraged such modalities as Guided Meditative Visualization in groups to best help her patients. In the past, she has utilized dance therapy, which greatly attuned her to the nonverbal experiences of patients, in much the same way that being a writer has attuned her to their verbal experiences. Alongside her professional pursuits, she always supervises other mental health practitioners.

Working out of New York City for more than 40 years, Dr. Kavaler-Adler draws upon a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical psychology from the Gorden Derner Institute at Adelphi University, acquired in 1974. Certified in 1975 as a clinical psychologist in the State of New York, she has also been a supervisor of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis for more than 35 years. She has also taught and supervised at various psychoanalytic training institutes prior to founding the Object Relations Institute in 1991, including serving on the faculty of the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health, and being a training analyst, senior supervisor, and faculty member of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP). Related to her books on women artists and writers, she earned an honorary Doctor of Literature from Ignatius University in 2008.

Dr. Kavaler-Adler also belongs to several psychoanalytic societies including the Postgraduate Psychoanalytic Society and the Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology Society of Division 39 of the APA. Additionally, she is a psychologist with the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP).

A prolific author as well, Dr. Kavaler-Adler has published six books and more than 70 articles in professional journals. Among her notable books, she is most renowned for “The Compulsion to Create: Women Writers and Their Demon Lovers” (1993, 2013), “The Creative Mystique: From Red Shoes Frenzy to Love and Creativity” (1996, 2014), “Mourning, Spirituality and Psychic Change” from 2003, “Anatomy of Regret” from 2013, and “The Klein-Winnicott Dialectic: Transformative New Metapsychology and Interactive Clinical Theory” from 2014.

As a testament to her writing success, Dr. Kavaler-Adler has earned 16 accolades for her books and articles, including the Gradiva Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis in 2004 for her book “Mourning, Spirituality and Psychic Change.” Four of these awards were Arlene Wohlberg Memorial Awards from Postgraduate Center for Mental Health. She had also earned three other Gradiva Award nominations earlier in her career. Dr. Kavaler-Adler has also been a fellow of the American Board and Academy of Psychoanalysis since 2009 and was appointed to the editorial board for the online journal “The International Journal of Controversial Discussions,” in 2018. Looking toward the future, she intends to keep publishing books regarding psychology, as well as a creative non-fiction book and a book on famous women actresses.
