After receiving a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alabama in 1963, that same year Dr. Slaybaugh was hired as a counselor at Leesville State School in Leesville, Louisiana. In this role, she enjoyed working with students and was encouraged to pursue further study in social work by John Saula, the school social worker. Additionally, in 1990, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Dr. Slaybaugh worked at Leesville State School until 1978, and went on to work for the Department of Social Services in various roles with the aging program, planning office, audit section, director of budget and audit services. In 2012, she officially retired from her post as a licensed clinical social worker. Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Slaybaugh is proud to have served the Department of Social Services in different areas and to be a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. However, she is most honored to have adopted her children, Ruth and Robert, later in life through the Department of Social Services, citing it as the best thing she has ever done. In addition to John Saula for introducing her to the world of social work, Dr. Slaybaugh credits Priscilla Ingrahm, who was head of the state department for aging, for showing her the ropes inside the field.
