Carolyn Schindler Sparks, Public Health Nutritionist at the North Carolina Department of Environmental Health, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in nutrition.

From a young age, Ms. Sparks had an interest in medicine and dietetics. She wanted to help people pave the way to a healthier lifestyle, as she had witnessed her brother suffer from juvenile diabetes. She pursued this passion by earning a Bachelor of Science in foods and nutrition from Kent State University in 1965. One year later, she graduated from a dietetic internship at the Baylor University Medical Center. Additionally, in 1968, she obtained a Master’s in public nutrition from Case Western Reserve University. After more than 30 years of professional work, Ms. Sparks retired in 1999, notably serving the North Carolina Department of Environmental Health and Natural Resources as nutrition field services branch head for five years and nutrition program consultant for seven years.

In the earlier years of her career, between 1968 and 1989, Ms. Sparks had worked for the North Carolina State Board of Health as a nutrition consultant and for the North Carolina Division of Health Services as a maternal and child health nutrition consultant. Additionally, she served as an adjunct clinical instructor at East Carolina University. For her outstanding work, Ms. Sparks earned the North Carolina Governor’s Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award in 1999. She was also named the North Carolina Dietetic Association Member of the Year in 1988 and was granted the Outstanding Service Award from the North Carolina Public Health Association in 1977. Earlier, she was named an Outstanding Young Women of America and earned the American Diabetes Association Volunteer of the Year from the Wayne County Chapter, of which she is now president. A member of the North Carolina Public Health Association, Eastern North Carolina District Dietetic Association, and North Carolina Dietetic Association, Ms. Sparks can also be found in the 21st edition of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest.
