Erwin Vanhaecke, Pharmaceutical Executive has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership.
When deciding what to do in his life and career, Dr. Vanhaecke knew that he wanted to help others and make a difference. He found that he could provide these services to others through the field of medicine and medical devices that would help raise the quality of life for others. He sought out this in his academic pursuits, first becoming a pharmacist in his native Belgium. He earned a PhD in pharmacy at the State University of Ghent in 1989. He continued with postgraduate work in business management at Vlaamse Ekonomische Hoge School, which set him up for his later executive roles in the field.
Dr. Vanhaecke’s most recent position has been as the strategic advisor of quality at Novartis. He previously served at the executive vice president and head of the group of quality at the company from 2012 to 2018. Earlier in his career, Dr. Vanhaecke garnered experience with Pharmaceuticals Alcon, Alcon-Couvreur, and as a lecturer and research assistant for the State University of Ghent. From 1996 to 1998, Dr. Vanhaecke leveraged his skills and expertise as the chairman of the Ophthalmic Special Interest Group. He has also been connected with the pharmaceutical community through his writings, publishing with the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, the Journal of Applied and Environmental Microbiology. The Regulatory Affairs Journal, the International Journal of Artificial Organs and the Journal of Veterinary Pharmacological Therapy.
Dr. Vanhaecke considers the highlight of his career thus far to be leading the Quality Organization and overseeing 107 manufacturing plants to excellence. In addition, when he was about 37, European legislation was passed, which didn’t work for the industry. He took the initiative to contact all of his competitors across the globe and set up working groups with all of them trying to come up with very reasonable arguments as to why the legislation as such was not practical. After joint efforts with all of these governments, they were able to have it revised. Everyone told him it would never happen but the lawmakers were eventually able to see their error, which set them on the course of revision. In 2015, Dr. Vanhaecke earned a Novartis Excellence Award and he received a Belgian Cross of Knight in the Order of the Crown in 1999.
