Delois Marie Brown, Retired Child Psychiatric Nurse, Psychologist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of child psychiatric nursing.
While attending Prairie View University, Ms. Brown became interested in pediatric and psychiatric nursing. Upon graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science, she pursued a Master of Science from the University of Maryland where she found a fellowship in child psychiatric nursing, and she knew she wanted to use her skills to help children. Ms. Brown graduated in 1967 and assumed the roles of supervisor nurse child psychiatric nurse at the Child Study and Treatment Center in Tacoma, Washington, from 1967 to 1971, psychiatric and child nurse instructor at the University of Washington in Seattle from 1971 to 1973, and project director within the university’s School of Medicine from 1972 to 1973. Her additional occupations include school nurse for Tacoma School District 10 from 1974 to 1995, during which time she earned a Master of Arts in public administration from Bernard Baruch College in 1984. Ms. Brown then assumed the role of nurse administrator from 1995 until her retirement in 2007.
The highlight of Ms. Brown’s career was when she applied for the National Urban Fellow Program and received that honor, as it was a nationwide search. Out of 40 individuals, Ms. Brown was chosen which granted her an opportunity to live in New York. She was provided with a car and a driver, and her class had a reception at the Mayor’s house. Working with children as a school nurse was a point of pride for her as she has always loved children, and many of her cases were afflicted with emotional problems. She enjoyed being able to combine her knowledge of pediatrics and psychiatry to help the children. As a testament to her expertise, Ms. Brown is a Nationally Certified School Nurse, a Nationally Certified Child Psychiatric Nurse, holds Principal Administrator Credentials from Pacific Lutheran University, and has been featured in the 16th edition of Who’s Who of American Women.
