Philip Metres, Clinical Psychologist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in psychology research and practice.
Dr. Metres prepared for his career at the College of the Holy Cross, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 1964, and served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy until 1969. He continued his military service as a captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve for more than 20 years, retiring in 1991. Dr. Metres continued his studies at U.S. International University, where he earned a Master of Arts in social psychology in 1971, and began working as an instructor of psychology at San Diego Evening College and as a research psychologist at the Naval Health Research Center. As a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Illinois, he concluded his academic pursuits in 1975, earning a PhD in professional psychology from the U.S. International University. From 1978 to 1980, he served as a clinical psychologist at Old Orchard Hospital.
Dr. Metres continued his career in 1980 by starting as a clinical psychologist at the North Shore Center for Counseling and Therapy, where he continues to practice. In addition to his professional pursuits, he presented a workshop on combat stress and post-traumatic stress disorder for PESI in 2008 and 2009, and has applied his experience and knowledge as a NAMI supported facilitator of Military Veterans Group Psychotherapy since 2018. Dr. Metres co-edited “Family Separation and Reunion: Adjustment of POW’s and MIA’s” in 1975, and has contributed numerous articles to professional journals. He was recognized for his excellence in military service with multiple awards, including a Bronze Star with a combat V-Device, a Meritorious Service Medal, a Republic of Vietnam Staff Service Honor Medal First Class, and a Navy Unit Commendation Medal. As a testament to his success, experience, and stature, Dr. Metres has been featured in the second edition of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America and the 21st and 25th editions of Who’s Who in the Midwest.
