A native of Liverpool, England, Ms. Hanson immigrated to the United States at 14 years old. Upon completing high school, she attended The College of Saint Rose and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1956. Soon thereafter, she joined the Catholic Schools of the Diocese in Syracuse, New York, as a teacher in 1957.  Ms. Hanson went on to teach Latin and English for 12 years, later deciding to expand her horizons and secure a Master of Arts from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. in 1967. Consequently, she accepted the position of a clinical social worker with Catholic Social Services in 1969. Realizing she discovered her passion, Hanson went on to receive a Master of Social Work from the Marywood University School of Social Work in 1977. A certified social worker, she also became a diplomate of the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work.

Moreover, Ms. Hanson contributed as a clinical social worker for a number of institutions, some of which include the Addiction Center of Broome County, Inc., PROBE Inc., and the Binghamton University Psychological Clinic between 1975 and 1981. She assumed employment at the UHS Binghamton General Hospital as a clinical social worker in 1981, a position she held for 23 years until her retirement in 2004. Ms. Hanson has excelled as a part-time clinical social worker for the Samaritan Counseling Center in Endicott, New York, since 2004. Additionally, she was associated with the executive board of AIC-USA between 2007 and 2016.

Alongside her primary endeavors, she served as a member of the board directors and the president of PROBE, Inc., for a year.  Civically, Ms. Hanson has devoted a portion of her time to the National Ladies of Charity since 2004. Ms. Hanson attributes her level of success to flexibility and the ability to accommodate certain organizational situations. She also believes that a good education is fundamental. An avid traveler, she visited Russia, Georgia, and Romania in the past. In the near feature, she would like to explore Middle European countries. As a testament to her success, Ms. Hanson has been lauded with an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Award.
