Dr. Luthra’s interest in medicine started after he witnessed the way patients were being treated and wanted to be a part of changing that for the better. He chose the field of rheumatology after noticing during his residency, that there weren’t a lot of doctors in the field. Dr. Luthra graduated from St. Peter’s College in 1960, from St. John’s College of Agra, Uttar Pradesh in India in 1962 and received a MBBS from Christian Medical College in Ludhiana, India in 1967. From there, he became an intern and then a resident of the Christian Medical College in Ludhiana, India from 1967 to 1968. Dr. Luthra then came to the United States and became an intern at Middlesex General Hospital in 1969. He followed that up by becoming a resident in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago from 1970 to 1972.
Several people in Chicago that he interacted with encouraged him in the right direction including, Harvey Golden, MD, who was a rheumatologist that trained Dr. Luthra at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Golden is the one that got him into rheumatology and encouraged him to apply to the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Luthra started at the Mayo Clinic in 1972 as a trainee of rheumatology and in 1975, he moved to the position of consultant, which he still does to this day. He became the John Finn Professor of medicine at the Mayo Medical School in 1995, a position he held until 2017 when he became an emeritus professor of medicine. He was also the chairman of the division of rheumatology at the Mayo Medical school from 1996 to 2004, when he became emeritus chairman. As a testament to his career, Dr. Luthra has been inducted as a member of the Arthritis Foundation and the American Board of Internal Medicine Rheumatology Board, among others.
