Prior to this illustrious role, she served the university as an associate professor, assistant professor and instructor between 1967 and 1981, as well as the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, as an instructor from 1966 to 1967. She commenced her career as a staff nurse at University Hospitals of Cleveland in 1961 and the head nurse of Mount Sinai Hospital in Cleveland in 1962.
Alongside her primary endeavors, Dr. Hess has recently served as an adjunct assistant professor with the Samuel Merritt School of Nursing in 2008 and the assistant director of the associate degree program at Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts from 2010 to 2013. In the past, she formerly served as a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1977 to 1985. A member of the American Nurses Association, the Gerontological Society of America, and the American Society on Aging, she has additionally contributed myriad articles to professional journals and chapters to books. In fact, she is an eight-time recipient of a Book of the Year Award through the American Journal of Nursing for her book “Toward Healthy Aging,” having previously co-authored the first eight editions. She is additionally the co-author of “Understanding the Aging Patient,” published in 1977.
Dr. Hess holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University, a Master of Science from the University of Colorado, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Walden University. She is a certified geriatrics nurse practitioner and gerontological nurse through the University of California, San Francisco, and has been certified in gerontology by Holy Names College. Dr. Hess has notably been highlighted in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in American Nursing, and Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare in recognition of her achievements in the medical and education industries.
