An accomplished and esteemed psychotherapist with decades of expertise in the field, Ms. Davis Hammer served in a private practice from 1989 until her retirement in 2005. In her position, she conducted psychotherapy sessions with adolescents to help them improve their mental health and well being, as well as teach children coping mechanisms to deal with their emotions and behavior. Alongside her prominent role as a therapist, she briefly held the role of guidance director in the Concord School District for one year and school psychologist at St. Johnsbury Academy for seven years.
Although now retired, Ms. Davis Hammer has participated in a number of engagements in her local community, including St. Johnsbury Academy, where she has remained the chairman since 2003. In addition, she has been a board member of the board of visitors at Lyndon State College since 2001, chair and board member of Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital since 2001, and a member of the William Glasser Institute since 1985. She also was a charter member of the Northeastern Vermont Special Olympics and an honorary board chair of Vermont Children’s Aid.
To prepare for her illustrious career, Ms. Davis Hammer pursued an extensive education, earning an Associate of Arts in secretarial science at Colby Community College in 1955, followed by a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education at Lyndon State College in 1974 and 1985, respectively. She is a certified psychotherapist in the State of Vermont, and she has been certified in experimental education for grades one through 12 since 1974. In addition, she was certified by the William Glasser Institute of Reality Therapy in the State of California in 1986.
In an effort to remain abreast of recent developments within the industry, Ms. Davis Hammer maintains affiliation with several organizations, including the American Counseling Association, Caledonia County Republican Committee, and Northeast Kingdom Restorative Justice Council. Impressively, she was the first woman to be on the Board of Selectman in the town of Saint Johnsbury. She formerly acted on the board of trustees and was the board chair at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital.
In recognition of her exceptional contributions to health care and her community, Ms. Davis Hammer has accrued several accolades throughout her career, such as the Asa Gifford Award and the Executive Directors Award from the Vermont Children’s Aid Society. Married to Kenneth F. Hammer since 1958 with five children and six grandchildren, Ms. Davis Hammer enjoys reading, playing the piano and swimming in her spare time. She is a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 and has been highlighted in the 25th edition of Who’s Who of American Women.
