Sister Margaret Mary McKenna

Margaret Mary McKenna, Foundation Administrator at New Jerusalem Now, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Health Care Providers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in addiction recovery.

Sister McKenna has been interested in helping others heal from a very early age. She began her career in 1955 by earning a Bachelor of Arts from Chestnut Hill College. She continued her education at Notre Dame University, receiving a Master of Arts in 1960. In 1980, Sister McKenna received a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a Certified Medical Mission Sister and a Certified Spiritual Director.

Sister McKenna started working as an art director for Medical Missionary Magazine in 1956, a magazine that focused on medical colleagues involved in missionary work overseas. While working for the magazine, she also taught as a professor at St. Theresa’s Institute and served as the Formation Director of Medical Mission Sisters. From 1970 to 1975, she was an assistant professor at La Salle University while also founding and managing the Shofar House Community. She utilized her leadership skills and founded and directed the Peacemaker’s Reflection Community from 1983 to 1988. Seeing a need in her community for relief for individuals affected by addiction, Sister McKenna founded New Jerusalem Now in 1989. Since then, she has continued to lead programs and serve as a spiritual director and counselor for drug and alcohol treatment. She emphasizes the importance of nonviolence and rehabilitation in her practice.

In addition to her primary work, Sister McKenna is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature, the Catholic Biblical Association, and the Atlantic Life Community. She has also been the Director of the Alternative to Violence Program and President of Simple Way. Furthermore, Sister McKenna has served as a board member for Other Side Magazine and is a member of the Governor’s Commission on Women.
