Dr. Chawla is an experienced psychiatric professional who became interested in the field due to the influence of her mentors. She attributes the success she has had to the skills and advice that has been passed down to her by these individuals. Earning an MD from the Medical College of Virginia in 1996, she opened her own private practice in 2002. In this role, she helps child, adolescent, and adult patients with their mental health needs.
An expert in the field, Dr. Chawla is affiliated with numerous professional organizations. She is a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the American Academy of Adult Psychiatry, the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, and the South Asian Women’s Leadership Forum. In addition, she has been an instrumental fundraiser for local children’s schools in her community and a guidance counselor for wellness programs at local children’s schools.
In 2001, Dr. Chawla was awarded a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, having previously received the James Gudger Award in 1995. Dr. Chawla was heavily influenced by her mother, who grew up in a situation of war and poverty and persevered. She grew up without clothes and access to food, and immigrated to the United States from India to make a better life for herself and her family. In the coming years, Dr. Chawla endeavors to expand her practice, take on more consulting work and become involved with additional organizations.
